PostHeaderIcon Missionary Mom Poem

Joni has a new pen pal, Melissa Jolley, she is another missionary mom from Nate's mission. They talk all of the time and she sent Joni this poem. Joni wanted me to post it. Enjoy!

A Missionary Christmas (author unknown)

I skipped the sales after Thanksgiving. The thrill just wasn't there.
No pictures taken with Santa Claus, My decorating has no flair.
His presents are shoes, shirts, and ties, two suits and socks...no fun.
I've bought him all white clothes because... This year I'm giving Christ my
son.

I've spent more time in the temple, my testimony stirred.
I've reread November's Ensign, Felt strength come from His words.
Our family prays more frequently. My tears are quick to run.
Abraham seems closer because, This year I'm giving Christ my son.

I wonder how those Lamanite mothers, gave their sons to war?
Or how the pioneers chose Zion , their sacrifice was so much more.
My loss will be his presence, I'll miss his smile a ton
For two years we will pray for him, I'm giving Christ my son.
I stare at his face when he's not looking. I memorize his eyes, their
shine.
He's always hungered for the part of him, that makes his soul divine.
The stories and lessons he always heard, His choice and mine are one.
I'll put my faith in God's hand, This year, I'm giving Him my son.

Past gifts have lost their glitter; I think I finally understand
Christ's birth should be celebrated by giving Him a hand.
It's because I know Christ lives and reigns that all his packing's done.
My gift has taken years to make, This year... I'm giving Christ my son.

I know there's One who understands, the sacrifice I'm making.
Who knows the gift I willingly give, The toll it will be taking.
For He has done it all before, Greater love - there could be none.
For years ago God gave to me, His only begotten son.

The hands I washed, the hands I held, The hands I taught to pray;
Now knock on doors to find the ones Who will listen to what he'll say.
Because I know Christ needs him, Until all the gathering's done,
My gift has taken years to make. This year...I'm giving Christ my
son.

hey mom. hey dad. hey family.
so this week has been good. we had some good investigators show up to church
also funny story. so this week we went to bed like thursday night or
so. and we go in.. close the door... say our prayers and im like oh. i
gotta pee. so i get up. and walk to the door and turn the know.
anddddd it moves but the handle doesnt work. now the doors here are
ghetto. and so after an hour and a half of trying different ways to
get out of this door without destroying it and we finially have to
give up. there is no way anyway will be getting into this house to
open it or anything. so i did it like brad. and punched a hole through
it so i could reach the other doorknob. which ended up not working
either. in the end we wripped a foot of the door and the whole handle
out of it so we could open the door and get out. man i had to pee by
the time we got that open hahaha crazy so that was the adventure of
the week.
we went and sang in a park this weekend with a bunch of little kids for
one of the other areas. it was pretty fun. me and this other kid did a
solo in spanish. ha it was chill.
christmas will be fun too. we will have a meeting on the 22 with all
the mishionaries in the city and then on christmas we will be with a
family from five till ten and then on new years too. appearently you
guys are supposed to call us. at the church or possibly a members
house on christmas. ill have to let you know. appearently its a rule
we only get 40 mins now just fyi.
anyway. think thats all. love you. talk to you soon.
love nate

dont worry mom. i know how to mop like a champ

oh and then one of the guys in my district we were at the church for
an interview last friday of the guy that got baptised and the elder in
my district after the investigators had left just decideds to have a
minute long sezure. it was crazy were just like holdin him and hopin
he doesnt die. theres nothin we can do. it all came out good though.
that was fun hahah hes good ish now

Sorry Dave and Joni were out of town last week so I just got the letter today.

hey mom so this week has been good. we got to baptise a girl named reyna. shes the sister of hugo and daniela and daughter of mary that were just baptised on the fifth of september. it was sweet. we had to put our hard hats on for this one. two hours before the baptism. the drainage system for the font was backed up. so we spent the next two hours draining, cleaning, and getting this font ready. it took some work but in the end it all was good and the baptism was great. conference was good. its kinda hard in spanish cuz the jokes and stuff and voices obviously dont transfer over and its just not the same but its super good still. sounds like youve been havin fun on your cruise. sam can dribble ten times!! thats so cool. high five to sam. ha and ellie the little dancer. que bueno. bout time mike gets some good grades haha. tell him to keep that up then. and brad just workin away. its probably pretty cool workin at harley. seein all the new stuff all the time and havin the sweet bikes in and out.

im super excited to get to go to the cabin and use it in the winter. and the summer. thats gonna be sweet. i love it up there. i think im a mountain person myself. it just feels weird that theres no canyons and all that stuff here.

well so its transfers again. this one went super fast cuz it was super fun. elder wakefield is leaving and going to reynosa. and im stayin here. and and elder named elder morley is comin here. hope hes cool and a solid baptiser. this last transfer we got blessed. insanely. oxto fruit co has come to a close. should be fun though the next transfer will be on november 22 and then through christmas till jan 3 so since im stayin here i sure hope they dont transfer just before christmas away from the ward ive been in for five months ha. oh well. anyway love you all thanks for the letter. hope your havin fun on the cruise.

so this is our awesome picture that was after we had our baptism this week of this kid named abraham who satan was just trying to destroy. we didnt even get the sighnature or aproval from his mom until an hour before church. freaking miracle. so we ate campachanas and coke after and partied hahah what up. hight five. this is my comp elder wakefield btw. pretty chill. wake is almost the same as the word for ox in spanish. buey and free. just add a to to the end. frito. so we go by ox and to. (pronounced tow) ha and we call it oxto fruit co....... worldwide.... wide wide wide.

anyway.... hahah so ya we have definately seen the blessings here its been great. weve had six baptisms this month and ive had nine in this are total. tell grandma that i get all her hand written letters and thank you a ton they are amazing. tell abby and tyler congrats thats so cool they are gonna be sealed. i love the temple. still havent gone here though which is pretty sad. man i cant wait to see elder jolly again i gotta give that chap a hug. hes the funniest kid i know. i think that mexico is a completely diffent type of mission than others. they are all different but mexico especially. the corruptoin in this area is so great. everyone is living with people that they arent married to. kids at 14. drugs. gangs. its outta this world. it just makes it awesome to see people get baptised and become members. still no packages haha

we have three baptisms in the next two weeks and three more the two weeks after that. it’ll be sweet. a lady named Mariana. and then a kid named Hugo and his mom marie. they’re way sweet.

recently ive decided that Mexico was made for short people. first cuz everyone is short but also everything is short. the ceilings, the trees, the doorways. but ive lost about 20 lbs i think since being here at least. haven’t measured of lately. but yesterday got attacked by a five inch cockroach. no joke. this thing was huge. ill have to send the pic. we have tons of them. its still insanely hot but the canicula is supposed to end the 24th so hope it’ll cool down. November and December it just gets freezing hear apparently. im super excited. ha-ha.

PostHeaderIcon Letter from 8/16/10

PostHeaderIcon Letter from 8/2/10 - Happy Birthday Nate!!!!!!!

its crazy that im 20. the time went so fast from when i turned 16. highschool and life after flew. miss hanging with the family and skiing with my brothers and the neighborhood kids. ridin the bike. going to school. doing nothing all day with my friends and mike. bein a kid. family trips. days by the pool. the birthday was fine. i sang to myself. go me. thanks mom and dad for the package. it was awesome. the book is really great. and mike made i have come to the conclusion you have good taste in ties.

last night was fun as i was throwing up for about an hour. yay. maybe it was the cactus we ate.

it only took me a month here to find real milk. or the closest thing to it. the milk realy here sucks for the most part. its like drinking half and half. ive found a new colone. its called deet. deep forest scent. ladies love it. ha. i miss the temple too. going every week for almost five months you realize what a special place it is. how much ive learned there and the peace realy is amazing. its just a spiritual recharge. weve just been workin hard here. its alot of walkin in the heat. takes about an hour to walk from one of our area to the other. walking fast too. and we cant have bikes in this area cuz its too dangerous.

were teaching a really cool family too right now with two daughters ingry and fatima. theyre four and ten. and have a date for the 22.

anyway. im off. we only have an hour to email and write a letter to the pres so thats why i dont email everyone every week.

its ok to send letters to the office. its a little quicker i think. just barely. only its just cheaper to texas but packages send to texas only. especially if they have more than ten dollars of anything. plus its a ton cheaper. i really dont get time to write hand written letters but im gonna try and find time soon. love you all hope you all doing well.

love. nate

PostHeaderIcon Letter from 7-26-10

We baptized this weekend a guy named Carlos. he’s awesome. he just got outta prison a while ago and decided to turn his life around with the help of his brother in law and sister and family he’s awesome. 34 years old i think. and his nephew baptized him. rafita. ha. it means little rafiel. saddest part about Mexico is that there is tons of 7-11s but none hakve slurpies...... apostate if you ask me.

we live in an entirely concrete house that is more like an oven. the only benefit is you cant punch a hole in a concrete wall. ;) I usually have a rock or two in my pocket at all times too to throw at the dogs that occasionally attack us.

and Mexican people are funny. whenever they eat its like a race. just frantic. hands only ha-ha and they like to pet people. its weird....

oh and this week was awesome cuz they found like 63 bodies in a hole five minutes from our house that are all from the past two weeks. ah Mexico. but anyway. thanks all. thanks a ton. love you all and miss you all.

love Nate

The bodies of the 51 were found 5 minutes from Nate’s house thought you might be interested in this article.

Reporting from Mexico City —

Forensic workers have recovered 51 bodies, some burned and mutilated, from a mass grave believed linked to Mexico'sraging drug war, authorities said Saturday.

The site near a trash dump in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon is the second-largest clandestine grave found in recent weeks.

Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina said most of the dead were probably drug traffickers killed in fighting with rivals. But he acknowledged that the bodies had yet to be identified.

"They could have been people linked to organized crime, [killed in] a clash, in the war that the cartels are fighting among themselves," he told reporters.

"It undoubtedly shows the level of violence with which they confront each other."

At least three women were among the dead, authorities said, and the rest were men, aged between 20 and 50 and many bearing tattoos.

"The tattoos may tell us if they belonged to one group or the other," Adrian de la Garza, head of a state police agency, told Milenio television. DNA testing may be used to identify some of the dead, he added.

Some of the bodies were burned and some were dismembered. Several had their hands tied with rope or cords. They didn't appear to have been dead for more than 15 days, De la Garza said.

Digging began Thursday, when a military patrol reported seeing body parts and disturbed dirt in a field near the town of Juarez, and concluded Saturday. Workers used backhoes to move the earth and refrigerated trucks to hold the corpses.

De la Garza said several other graves appeared to be at the same site, suggesting that the number of dead could rise.

About 25,000 people have been killed since President
Felipe Calderon launched a military-led offensive against powerful drug cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006.

Calderon has said most of the dead are traffickers, but victims also include police, soldiers, mayors and civilians. Most killings are not investigated.

In late May, another mass grave, at an abandoned silver mine near the picturesque city of Taxco, yielded 55 bodies.

its pretty hot here to say the least and figure we actually walk about 25-30 miles every day. whew. i hate the heat. but its gettin a bit better here. our area is huge. its the same size as my area was in the us but we dont have a car or bikes and too poor to use many busses or taxis. ha i dunno whats more dangerous being in the cars or walking. oh those shoes i sent home. i switched off every day for four months and they were toast and my eccos are like new. minus the leather a bit cuz the days that we walked in the rain for four days.

so did you guys finnish the cabin finially? i miss it up there. more than anything i miss hanging out with the family. if i could do anything more it would just be hang out with you guys doing nothing and eating like were good at. the food here isnt bad. sometimes its awesome sometimes your scared for your life. omaha. theres a song by the counting crows. somwhere in the middle of nowhere. mikes way fun to be with when hes not whining haha anyway. we had a baptism last week if i didnt tell you. im outta time but ill send pics next week. his name was jonothan reyes. way cool. 27 and was investigating for a year and 7 months haha thats cool about brother tuller. i love that temple so much. thats the thing i miss the most right now was goin to the temple every week for four months. love it there. can get you through everything that peace. anyway. love you all. thanks for everything. brooke edit this letter hahah oh and ive only thrown up like four times since ive been here. heat sucks. and love you.

hey family so how are you. love you all.

im currently in guatalupe in monterrey in nuevo leon in mexico. in a little house in the tamaulipas branch. our house is orange. three rooms. two beds. a desk two chairs one dresser and a fridge or and a toilet with no seat and nice cold showers. awesome?

but its interesting here. i have kidds throw stuff at me every day. walk like 10-20 miles, in the hottest place you can imagine. take gold showers and sweat in my sleep and every other waking moment and sick every day. speaking of i was pretty sick this morning doin some good barfing and all that fun stuff. that was sweet. rained for three days strait here and washed away half the highways. and flooded tons of peoples houses like 3 feet in places. crazy. my companion is elder mirelez. doesnt speak a lick of english. makes things interesting and very frustrating at times to say the least. its hot too very hot. did i mention that? the people are great though minus the drivers haha they're all insane. my english gets worse and worse. thats about it. dont have any pictures yet cuz havent had the guts to take my camera with me anywhere. all i can say is im so greatful for the situation i live in with the people and family i have. and for the state and country im from. itll be interesting for the next 20 months.

hidey ho.

anyway. love you family. ps and friends ha
